Cookies are small text files that your browser places on your computer's hard drive. They save information about the way you browse a website so that when you return to that site, the site can recognize you. Cookies are also used to track user behavior and collect anonymous usage statistics for many websites.
Cookies may be served to you by the website you are visiting (first party cookies) or they may be placed by another website that is not hosted by us but has downloaded content from our website onto your computer (third party cookies).
Why would developers want to edit cookies in their browsers?
In a nutshell, it’s so that they can run browser tests on localhost.
Imagine you’re working with a new customer, who has asked you to make some changes to their website. You start by running a series of tests on your local machine to see how the code is behaving. These tests pass locally but when the code is deployed onto the live server, everything breaks!
What do you do next? You could try debugging the issue, but if it’s a security issue or something that needs an administrator access level, there’s no guarantee that you will be given access to these resources. You also don’t want to waste time waiting for someone else to fix this problem when all you need is access to these cookies.
So what can you do? Well, if you have an AMI (Amazon Machine Image) which contains your entire development environment including installed software packages and user credentials, then one solution would be to create another AMI without these cookies present (this can be done using tools like Packer). This way, you could use your original AMI as a baseline and install any additional software packages required for testing purposes such as an extra browser
